Megafracturing of igneous rocks as an integral feature of their monolithic pattern
// 17th International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM2017. Серия книг: International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference-SGEM. Conference proceedings. 29 June - 5July, 2017, Albena, Bulgaria. Volume 17, Issue 11. 605-612 pp, 2017.
Two large intrusive massifs of different ages on the Fennoscandian Shield are exemplified to analyze the distribution pattern of megafractures. Megafractures are rectilinear tectonic dislocations varying in length from hundreds of metres to several kilometres. Megafracturing was analyzed on rapakivi granites from the Neoproterozoic Salmi multi-phase massif. Another goal of the project was to study the Paleoproterozoic Ropruchei gabbrodolerite sill. Topographic maps and satellite images were used for analysis of megafracturing. The direction and length of megafractures were reconstructed on a topographic map. The data were processed in GIS Mapinfow software, and a density map of megafractures was compiled. The strike of megafractures was used to statistically analyze the orientation of tectonic dislocations and to reveal their characteristics. The length distribution of megafractures was done to assess the degree of disturbance of the entire massif and its individual zones. The density and distribution patterns of megafractures are assessed to analyze the megafracturing of the massif and to delineate more monolithic zones for subsequent detailed study. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of megafractures in massifs is correlated with higher-order tectonic structures.
